So you’ve got the basic bondage equipment – what’s next?

Sure, you’ve got rope and cuffs and perhaps a nice ball gag or two. But you’re looking to expand your collection. What do you get? Here are some suggestions, because we’re nice like that…

Spreader bars

Picture the scene: you’ve got your loved one trussed up exactly as you’d like them, and they’re pleading with their sexy eyes for you to go just that little bit further. What better way to step things up a notch than to spread them wide and lock them in place?

I’m biased, because the day I got my first spreader bar was a bit of a revelation. As the submissive one I worried that it’d be a bit uncomfortable, or force me into a splits-type position I couldn’t quite handle. After a bit of experimenting, though, we found not one but four different brilliant positions in which to use it.

Now the sound it jangling as it comes out of the cupboard is enough to have me drooling.

And not from my mouth.

You can pick up a spreader bar for £34.95, but I can’t guarantee you’ll be able to put it down again afterwards.

Bondage mittens

If what you’re after is to have your partner genuinely unable to escape, then one of the most important things is to focus on their fingers. You don’t want them sneakily undoing the knots while your back is turned to grab the lube, and the easiest way to secure them is with some proper bondage mittens.

Fun fact: the first time I encountered these was in a tiny bondage club somewhere in Japan, and the gentleman wearing them was sitting on the floor, panting like a dog, and drinking cheap whiskey out of a bowl on the floor. So, you know, they’re also brilliant for puppy play.

Want a pair? They’re yours for just £54.95 – not bad for pure leather, eh? Just make sure you remember that fully-restricted bondage – in which the other person has no means of escape whatsoever – should always be done under supervision. If you leave your partner alone and haven’t thought about what happens if they suddenly get cramp or the fire alarm goes off, then this is definitely not one you should try yourself at home.

Nipple clamps

Let’s end with one of my favourite bits of kinky equipment: nipple clamps. What makes nipple clamps so awesome? You may as well ask why having guys play with my nipples is so awesome – it just is, OK? The body wants what the body wants, and given that the nipples are the second most sensitive part of my body (and plenty of other people’s bodies), it’s hardly surprising that nipple fun is high on a lot of people’s bucket list.

This pair will only set you back a bargain £9.95, and they’re beaded and pretty and ridiculously easy to use. The rubberised tips and tweezer style means they’re a bit gentler than the butterfly ones I have in my bedside drawer, although if harshness is more your thing then you can pick up some butterfly nipple clamps for £13.95. Or a pair of heavy-duty (read: cruel and vicious) clamps can be had for £15.95.

If both of those look too scary, and you’re more into tease than torture (hey, I’m not judging!) then this pair of nipple ticklers might be what you’re after.

If you’re wavering, I can tell you that the nipples are (in my experience) one of the most underrated sexual areas. Sure, we look at nipples all the time in sexy pictures and porn. But how often do we spend a good long time really playing with them in the way they deserve? Not enough, my friends, not nearly enough. Especially when, according to Wikipedia and various other Respected Science Journals, some people are able to orgasm through nipple stimulation alone. There’s one you can try at home.
