What time of the year do you tend to have the most sex? If you’d asked me in December I’d probably have guessed that I have much more sex in the winter months: it’s chilly, after all, and there’s no better way of warming up than sliding under the duvet with a hot guy and a bottle of lube. But now that the sun’s shining, I suddenly wonder if – despite the excess sweat and occasional bout of sunburn – summer actually makes me more horny than winter.
I’ve been thinking of cataloguing the number of times I have sex over the next few months, and then doing the same around Christmas time to see what the answer actually is. If it turns out that I shag more in summer, I’m definitely not alone: research released in 2017, using data from period and sexual activity tracker app Eve, concluded that June, July and August were the most popular months for getting it on.
Why do we have more sex in the summer?
Perhaps it’s the fact that people wear more revealing clothes in the summer, or maybe it’s because we have more time to shag when we’re off on an annual holiday. Maybe it’s because companies like SexToys have big summer sex toy sales, where you can pick up treats at bargain prices, so you naturally get inspired to have more sexy sessions!
The scientists that Eve spoke to as part of their research had other explanations too:
“Sunlight is a major libido-booster, according to Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D., author of The Vitamin D Solution. “Exposure to sunlight triggers the body to produce mood-boosting dopamine and serotonin, plus a hormone called MSH—all of which spur your libido.” Soaking up the sun can also make people more open-minded and adventurous, according to research conducted at the University of Michigan. Which means you may find yourself more open to having that dance floor makeout turn into a one night stand.”
Whatever your reasons for feeling friskier, Eve estimated that people have 12% more sex in these months than at other times of year.
So how can you make the most of this sizzling summer sex? Well, firstly you could make sure that you have all the right equipment on hand: here are some suggestions for things you might like to keep in your bedroom including cooling lube and waterproof sex toys. And of course while the sunshine is making you feel adventurous, now is the perfect time to try out some of the more unusual sex toys and products that you’ve been tempted by when browsing the blog before.
Of course there are other ways to make sure you’re making the most of your summer lovin’…
1. Festival sex
By the third day of any festival you’ll probably be so muddy/sweaty/dusty that you’d rather have a bath than a shag, but that doesn’t stop some of the friskier among us from getting it on in a tent. If you’re planning on indulging in some festival shagging, my top tips are:
Bring lots of baby wipes with you. Seriously, whether your paranoia is about pit smell or post-sex cleanup, baby wipes can handle the worst of it.
Bring more condoms than you think you need. Because you can never have enough, right?
If you’re taking sex toys, test the sound levels of your vibes to make sure they won’t be heard even through thin tent walls – or make sure you camp next to people who’ll be partying hard enough to drown out the loudest noises!
2. Holiday sex
One of my favourite kinds of sex, because there’s nothing quite like a shag in fresh hotel sheets to make me feel like a queen! When you’re planning a sexy trip, one of the key things to research before you book your flights is which sex toys you’ll be able to bring – sex toys are illegal in certain countries – and whether you need to store them in your checked luggage or your hand luggage. Many rechargeable vibrators will come with a travel lock so you can avoid embarrassing buzzing noises when you’re going through airport security – you don’t want your holiday ruined before you’ve even got there!
3. Garden sex
If you’re reading this in London, and the closest you have to a garden is a Juliette balcony overlooking a busy shopping precinct, you might want to look away now. For everyone else: listen up! Spending some time in the garden over the summer isn’t just a good chance to soak up some rays – it can be a great way to explore new kinds of sex, or initiate sexy play that you wouldn’t be able to do at home.
Why not try daring your partner to run stark naked through the sprinklers, or take part in a bit of cheeky mutual masturbation in the paddling pool? Making sure the neighbours aren’t looking, of course! Or if you’ve been sunbathing too long and you need to cool off, how about asking your partner to gently rub ice over you to cool you down. You might have started on the lawn but chances are you’ll end up in the bedroom…
I hope this has given you all a few ideas – and if you have any more summer sex tips of your own, please do add them in the comments below or send them to us on Twitter! Together we can make sure that the next few months live up to their reputation for being sizzling hot!
