Erotic artefacts on show in Athens exhibition

Eroticism isn’t something new – for centuries people have been exploring sex and sexuality in art and literature.

Now a new exhibition is showing in Athens featuring erotic artefacts from around the world and, according to the Independent, it’s so cool that the Louvre is Paris wants to get hold of it.

From a giant marble phallus to a statue of Eros and Psyche in a passionate embrace, the works are sure to get hearts racing.

Nicholaos Stampolidis, director of the Museum of Cycladic Art, said: "We want to show the sweeping scope of love in ancient times."

History buffs will enjoy perusing the whole collection, but those who are simply interested in the sexy stuff will probably head quickly for the second floor.

Here, visitors are faced with Greek and Roman artefacts depicting everything from prostitution to bestiality.

"Our ancestors were hardly hypocritical prudes," said Mr Stampolidis. "They were very tolerant – their society was one of openness and lack of guilt."

Whether the exhibition will make it to Paris remains to be seen, as there are a number of logistical and contractual issues to deal with.

If there wasn’t already an excuse to book a holiday to Greece for some sun, sea and sex, there is now.
