Antidepressant could be used as female Viagra

Women suffering from a flagging sex drive could soon be offered help in the form of a new drug formerly tested as an antidepressant.

Scientists have discovered that while flibanserin fails to lift mood, it does have another interesting side effect.

They discovered that the drug increases sexual desire in females and gives them more satisfactory sexual experiences.

“It’s essentially a Viagra-like drug for women in that diminished desire or libido is the most common feminine sexual problem, like erectile dysfunction is in men,” said lead researcher Professor John Thorp.

Its discovery was also similar to that of Viagra, which was originally intended to treat heart problems but in fact was found to have different effects.

However, there may be other ways for women to boost libido, including losing weight.

Sex therapist Sue McGarvie recently wrote a book called Lean and Lusty: The Libido Diet which highlights the link between weight and libido.

She claims that by shedding a few pounds, overweight women can increase their sexual desire significantly.
