A love letter to cock rings – and some top cock ring tips!

What links New York, Poundland and Elton John’s wedding? The answer is cock rings! This often-underrated sex toy hit the headlines a little this week, as a promotional survey from a US-based company announced the top sex toys by individual state.

Dildos, it seems, were the most popular sex toy overall – and there’s no surprise there! Personally, they’re one of the bedroom staples that I use most often when I’m getting it on, and they also lend themselves nice and easily to collection. Got yourself a nice silicone dildo? Great! How about trying glass next? Or a different colour? Or one that’s compatible with a strap-on? There are plenty of options to choose from.

But in New York, the most popular sex toy is the humble cock ring. It’s linked to Poundland because last year Poundland released their first ever range of sex toys, which included a very simple cock ring (which we wouldn’t recommend trying out – there are much better options in the links below!). And cock rings featured in Elton John’s wedding because, as he recently told Graham Norton, the rapper Eminem gifted him a pair of diamond-encrusted cock rings as a wedding present when he got married. As far as wedding presents go, it certainly beats the hell out of a toaster.

Here at SexToys.co.uk we’re less fancy than Elton John (who isn’t?), but we’re also a much better bet for your sex toy purchases than your local Poundland. So if you’re on the lookout for a great value – and effective! – cock ring, here are my two favourite types of cock ring, as well as some tips on how to use them.

Silicone cock rings

If you’ve never used a cock ring before, silicone cock rings are the ones to get started on. Simple, stretchy, and do the job nicely, the Loving Joy Pocket Pleasers set gives you three different rings to play with. It’s important to try out different sizes when you’re getting started to see what feels most comfortable to you.

You can try out using the smaller rings at the base of your cock, to give an extra-hard erection and heightened sensitivity during masturbation or penetrative sex. Or even – my favourite – an extra-hard erection during oral sex, so the wetness and slipperiness feels even nicer for the person who’s giving you head. Just my opinion, of course, but I think cock rings are often underused during oral. If your partner is up for it, give it a go and see what a difference it makes!

With larger rings, you can often get them round your balls too, pushing everything together in a tight package and – again – giving you that heightened sensitivity.

Vibrating cock rings

These really come into their own during penetrative sex, but I would say that because I don’t have a cock, so I’m always looking for new ways to use them to pleasure myself. What I’m saying is that these work a charm for grinding against during shagging. Cock rings like this Tenga smart vibe ring give the same tightness, heightened sensation and stronger erections as the other cock rings, with the added bonus that they have a large contact point for grinding against during sex.

But it’s not all about me: many people enjoy the sensation of vibrating cock rings while they’re masturbating too. The power of vibrations on the top of the shaft can add an extra bit of pleasure to your penis itself, or if you flip the ring round you can feel the vibrations travelling through your balls or even your perineum, depending on which way you wear it. This Screaming O cock ring is deliberately designed to stimulate the balls, so is a good choice for anyone who feels the balls are often overlooked during sex and masturbation.

Other cock rings

Of course it’s not just these – there are plenty of cock rings on the market. And one of the great things about them is they tend to be very affordable – especially if you’re starting off with the non-vibrating kind.

You don’t have to limit yourself to the two I’ve suggested here – once you know a little more about the right sizing for you, and you’re used to using cock rings, then you may want to swap your stretchy silicone for a metal one like this Bound to Please metal cock ring, to give a more secure fit. Alternatively if you’d rather have an adjustable one which you can use around the base of your cock then expand to include the balls as well at any point, this silicone stud lasso ring should do the job!
