The art of orgasm, and why clitoral orgasms rock

POP QUIZ: During an obscenity trial, a lawyer stands in front of the court and announces that the material in question is obscene because it teaches people that “it’s perfectly normal to have a clitoral orgasm. And THAT IS WRONG.” When did this happen?

a) in the frigging dark ages, of course

b) in the staid and prudish Victorian era

c) less than fifty years ago.

Well done if you picked c, because – shocking though that might be – it is actually the right answer. Celebrate your win by giving yourself either a pat on the back, or a clitoral orgasm – the latter is definitely fine.

The line was uttered by a prosecutor back in the 1970s, who was arguing that the film Deep Throat should be banned. Deep Throat, in case you’ve never seen or heard of it, is one of the most famous porn films of all time. The story centres around Linda Lovelace, who has an unusual medical condition – her clitoris is located inside her throat. The film follows her journey towards orgasm, as she tries to stimulate her throat clitoris by giving head to a doctor with a really spectacular moustache.

Part of the prosecutor’s argument highlighted that the film was teaching women the wrong thing about sex: namely, that clitoral orgasms were good. The other night I watched a documentary about Deep Throat, and when I heard this line of argument I screeched ‘WHAT!?’ so loudly it nearly shattered my telly.

As a conoisseur of clitoral orgasms, I can assure you that they are good, and I suspect that if you have a clitoris of your own you’ll agree with me. But I could barely believe that as recently as the 1970s there was so little understanding of female sexuality or the female orgasm. People genuinely used to believe that the clitoral orgasm was bad.

[Brief pause in writing this blog post]

I’ve just checked again, with the aid of my Doxy, and it turns out I’m still right: clitoral orgasms are pretty ace.

Anyway, because orgasms are amazing (whether clitoral or vaginal) I thought this week’s blogpost could highlight some awesome celebrations of the female orgasm. So here goes:

Orgasmic art number one – Photos of female orgasm

Sure, there’s lots of porn in which women masturbate on camera, and if you want to see a girl’s O face then you could always head to one of the many porn sites dedicated to capturing the detail. This art project is a bit different, though. Photographer Linda Troeller and scholar Marian Schneider have set out to capture the diversity and variation of the female orgasm, by taking photos of many different women, at the exact moment they climax. It’s gorgeous.

Orgasmic art number two – Written depictions

I am a girl who loves words. Why bother with pictures when a thousand words can tell the same story, and let you imagine the juicier details for yourself? If you’re more of a visual person, you probably won’t agree, but nevertheless I think some of the best depictions of female orgasms come in literature. Here’s an extract from The Diary of Anaïs Nin. I challenge you to read it and not think it is 100% amazing:

“The entire mystery of pleasure in a woman’s body lies in the intensity of the pulsation just before the orgasm. Sometimes it is slow, one-two-three, three palpitations which then project a fiery and icy liqueur through the body. If the palpitation is feeble, muted, the pleasure is like a gentler wave. The pocket seed of ecstasy bursts with more or less energy, when it is richest it touches every portion of the body, vibrating through every nerve and cell. If the palpitation is intense, the rhythm and beat of it is slower and the pleasure more lasting. Electric flesh-arrows, a second wave of pleasure falls over the first, a third which touches every nerve end, and now the third like an electric current traversing the body. A rainbow of color strikes the eyelids. A foam of music falls over the ears. It is the gong of the orgasm. There are times when a woman feels her body but lightly played on. Others when it reaches such a climax it seems it can never surpass. So many climaxes.”

Orgasmic art number three – Hysterical Literature

YES THIS IS DEFINITELY ART. Women try to read literature while being masturbated with a wand. It’s one of those YouTube videos that starts off ordinary and then gets interesting and then gets… well, totally mesmerisingly amazing.

This one’s the first in the series, and features the gorgeous Stoya. If you like it, there’s a whole YouTube channel of them. The best part is that if you watch them with headphones they’re basically safe for work.
