Dry January, Veganuary, Januhairy: what impact do these have on your sex life?

New year, new you? We’re over that in 2019. The idea that you need to remake your whole body or personality when the new year rolls round is a bit dystopian. But with initiatives like Veganuary or Dry January on the rise, many people are using this month to try and make smaller lifestyle changes that can give them a boost through the rest of the year.

Let’s have a look at these different initiatives – what exactly is ‘Januhairy’? How can you stick to your ‘Veganuary’ pledge in the bedroom? And while we know ‘Dry January’ will affect your time in the pub, will it have any impact on you in the bedroom?

Dry January – can quitting alcohol improve your sex life?

You’ve almost certainly heard of Dry January – where some people challenge themselves to avoid all alcohol for the month of January. Either to make up for overindulgence during the festive season or just to kick-start a healthier lifestyle for the next year.

There are a number of potential benefits to avoiding (or cutting down on) alcohol, not least the fact that drinking can make it more difficult for you to become aroused. If you struggle to get wet, or maintain an erection, there are sex products that can help – namely great lube or cock rings. And if you find that alcohol decreases your sensitivity, investing in a great vibrator or masturbation sheath could help in the short term.

But the main benefit of cutting down from alcohol, as explained in this Metro article, is that cutting down on alcohol can help you sleep better and give you more energy. So that’s more time you can spend getting kinky with your partner!

Veganuary – what impact does a vegan diet have on your sex life?

Let me start by saying that you’ll find no vegan jokes from me here. I’m a big fan of vegan food, and I even made a deliberate trip to Greggs last week to sample their now-infamous vegan sausage roll (it’s really nice, I promise). Vegan diets don’t have to be boring – there are plenty of incredible vegan foods you can buy in the supermarket these days, so if you’re doing Veganuary then I wish you luck and I hope you find lots of new tasty recipes. But does veganism have any impact on your sex life?

Vegan diets can often be healthier than diets which rely heavily on meat: you’re eating way more fruit and veg, for a start, which can give you vital nutrients to keep your energy up (good for long sex sessions!). The NHS has some great advice on how to eat healthily as a vegan, and if you stick to their rules you should find yourself feeling more energetic, perhaps have clearer skin (thanks to the veggies!) and see other health benefits too.

And if you want to maintain your veganism through other areas of your life, you can invest in some vegan sex products too!

Sliquid Naturals Swirls are vegan lubes that taste and smell delicious. Because they’re water-based, they are safe to use with silicone sex toys as well as with condoms, and they’re hypoallergenic, glycerin- and paraben-free. If you’d like something simpler, Sliquid H2O is also vegan but without the scent and flavour of the Swirls. And if you fancy something you can use for massage play, how about these edible massage candles? You light them and they smell beautiful, then they produce a delightful rich oil that you can use for massages… and even lick off when you get to the right moment…

Januhairy – improving your body confidence!

The excellent and punningly-titled Januhairy is brand new, dreamed up by student Laura Jackson at the University of Exeter. She felt compelled to do something to try and tackle the problem of bodyshaming when it came to body hair. After growing out her own body hair for a performance, Laura told the BBC that:

“Though I felt liberated and more confident in myself, some people around me didn’t understand or agree with why I didn’t shave … I realised that there is still so much more for us to do to be able to accept one another fully and truly.”

I couldn’t agree more. While we’re definitely getting better, as a society, at embracing the difference between all our bodies, there are some tropes that just refuse to die: the idea that women should be entirely free from body hair is definitely one of them.

So while you’re getting acquainted with your new Januhairy body, and building new layers of self-confidence based on your natural look, now seems like as good a time as any to invest in some sexy lingerie. A bodystocking, perhaps, to show off every curve? Or perhaps just a really beautiful bra and knickers set to strut around the house in…
