Post Porn: Finland releases gay bondage stamps

This Autumn, people across Finland will have reason to pause for thought when they lick the back of these new, homo-erotic stamps designed by artist, Tom of Finland.

The images of leather-clad bikers and naked posteriors were tucked in among the unveiling of 33 new stamp designs by the Finnish postal service Itella, which although clearly controversial, has been subsequently lauded by some as an excellent reason to put a spotlight on the country’s recent debate of legalising same-sex marriage.

Artist Tom of Finland (real name Touko Laaksonen), is now renowned as “beyond question the most influential creator of gay pornographic illustration” by Finland’s post office, so much so that his works have achieved iconic status…enough to get him on a national stamp!

The sheet of three stamps is to be released in September in conjunction with a new Postal Museum planned for the Vapriikki centre in Tampere which will house an exhibition of Laaksonen’s work . To select which of Laaksonen’s more than 3,500 drawings would appear on the stamps, Posti consulted graphic artist Timo Berry as well as Susanna Luoto, the Finnish representative of the Tom of Finland Foundation, which is “dedicated to protecting, preserving and promoting erotic art.”

“The sheet (of stamps) portrays a sensual life force and being proud of oneself. There is never too much of that in this northern country,” said Berry in an Itella press release.
