Recently, the fabulous company Desire Cruises got in touch with us to tell us about their latest cruise - one where the main entertainment is - you guessed it - sex! Obviously it is right up my alley, and I am currently trying to persuade my other half that we definitely need to attend. It's got play rooms, clothes-optional swimming and jacuzzi areas, nightly entertainment that includes burlesque and dress-up... oh and the itinerary takes in some beautiful sunny spots. So hotter (in every sense) than any sexy trip you could take in the UK.

If you're tempted, check out their website and book your place on the next cruise – from 26th September to 3 rd October and taking in stops from Venice, Italy to Croatia and Slovenia . Lovely.

But what exactly does one do on a sexy cruise? Well, you have sex. In any and every way you can imagine, with a variety of lovely cruise-going companions that you're bound to meet along the way. Because it's a holiday, though, you won't be able to bring your full-to-bursting sex toy chest along with you – you have to pack carefully. So which are the best sex toys to take with you on holiday? What can you bring that won't scare the customs officers, or get waterlogged in the jacuzzi during a group-sex session? I am here to help...

1. Metal butt plugs

Metal toys have the double benefit of being compatible with most types of lubes - so when you're getting sticky in a group play session you don't need to worry about lube compatibility. They also don't need batteries or a charger – especially handy because you can put them in your luggage and they won't start vibrating as you walk through customs.

I love all kinds of butt plugs, and I have a quite astonishing collection. But as yet I don't have one of these incredible ribbed silver butt plugs . It's next on my wishlist, and if you're planning on getting naughty as well as nautical on a sexy holiday cruise, I think it should be on your wishlist too.

2. Lube and condoms (ideally a couple of different kinds)

While we're on the subject of insertable toys, lube is a must if you're jetting off for a swinging sea-voyage. You want a decent water-based lube – Sliquid is a good bet because the brand avoids using additives and parabens which can irritate people. The more people you're playing with, the more care you need to take over the lubricant you choose.

Condoms, of course, are a must. There is nothing more annoying (and I should know) than getting stuck into a threesome (or foursome, or moresome) with some brilliant new people only to realise you don't have condoms available to do all you want to do. Work out how many condoms you think you'll need for your trip, and then triple that number. You'll be able to buy condoms on board the Desire Cruise too, of course, but you can never be too prepared.

3. BDSM gear

On board Desire Cruises, you can take advantage of their playroom – described as an 'erotic playground for adventurers.' Of course all good adventurers need equipment, and BDSM kit like gags, cuffs and rope is all easy to slip into your suitcase – opening up plenty of different play options when you arrive on board.

4. Fancy dress!

While some spaces on the ship are clothing optional, during the evening entertainment there are also plenty of opportunities to dress up – or dress down, to be more accurate. Desire Cruises hosts a number of theme nights from '3 piece suit' (where your three pieces could just be two nipple pasties and a thong) to a masked ball, where you could wear this gorgeous masquerade mask twinned with your favourite pair of stockings.

5. Remote control sex toys

If you're off on the cruise with your partner, there are plenty of opportunities for the pair of you to play sexy games. This is especially helpful if it's your first time swinging, or you just want to take a little time to warm up. Remote-control sex toys like this remote vibrating bullet or the incredible Lelo Hugo prostate massager mean that one of you can place the toy in your pants (or your bum if it's the Hugo) and the other can spend the day teasing and turning them on using just the remote control.

The Hugo is pricier than other toys, but I can tell you that the remote on that is motion sensitive, which means you can achieve pretty great results just by holding the control in your hand, staring into your lover's eyes, then shaking it as hard as you can and watching their eyes glaze over with delight. It's one of my favourite tricks, and I'm guessing it's going to be even more fun if you do it in a playroom with others looking on...
