Should I take Viagra?

Dear Rebecca,

I’ve just started dating a woman that’s quite a bit younger than me. I’m worried that I might not be able to ‘keep it up’ long enough to satisfy her. I’ve been thinking about taking Viagra but I’ve heard it has some bad side effects. What would you recommend?

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your email. If you’ve not had problems maintaining an erection in the past I would recommend you take it slow and easy and see how it goes. It’s likely that if you take your time and allow your relationship to blossom naturally that you won’t have any problems.

In order to relax into being sexual with someone, we need to know that we’re safe, that it’s ok to be vulnerable. By taking your time and allowing the connection between you to develop you’ll probably find that your erection will be just fine and that you will really enjoy getting to know each other sexually.

If you do find that you’re having erection problems with your new girlfriend, talk to her about it. Sometimes the pressure to impress someone new can make it difficult to get or maintain an erection. Take the pressure off and be honest about how you’re feeling. Talk to her about what her expectations are and what she’s interested in sexually.

Personally I’m not a big fan of taking Viagra or other such drugs unless you absolutely have to. One reason is that there are dangerous side effects, but more importantly because it can become easy to then avoid the actual issue and never address it. If you feel you must take it, use it as little as possible. Get your confidence and erection back and then stop taking it.

Wishing you lots of sexy fun in your new relationship.

With love,

Rebecca
